Partner in Charge - Luc Imbrechts (°1961)

He graduated cum laude as licentiate in law (now : master of laws) in 1983 at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

During the next two years Luc combined an apprenticeship as solicitor at the bar of Brussels, Belgium (supervisor : Prof. Dr. M. Waelbroeck, (Liedekerke, Wolters Waelbroeck & Kirkpatrick law firm) with a special license in European Law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles where he graduated summa cum laude.

Finally in 1986 he became Master of Comparative law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

Between 1986 and 1990 Luc was employed at the Mergers and Acquisitions division of the General Bank in Brussels (Belgium). Here Luc acquired substantial knowledge on the Belgian business market, different banking products and financial techniques.

As from 1990 until early 2009, Luc Imbrechts was chief legal counsel (CLO) at the Jan De Nul group. During this time Jan De Nul, that originally was a local Flemish civil construction company grew to become one of the major players in the dredging, land reclamation and stone dumping niche markets. He was involved with all the legal aspects of i.a. the reclamation of the platform of the Chek Lap Kok airport in Hong Kong, the concession for the operation of the Rio Parana (880 km – 18 years) in Argentina, the privatization of the dredging fleet in Mexico, the contract for the construction of the Jebel Ali Palm 2 in Dubai (UAE), the (PPP) concession of public works for the water purification plant at Brussels North (1.1 million IE), the sanitation of the Jakusevic dumpsite in Zagreb-Croatia, e.a. As part of his job Luc was involved in (the preparation of) several arbitrations according to the laws of the Benelux countries, Denmark, Switzerland, Mexico, Hong Kong and China and a Dispute Adjudication procedure in Croatia.

Luc speaks and writes fluently Dutch, English and French (daily - incl. legal drafting). In addition, through hours of negotiations he received a good basic understanding of the Spanish legal language.

Luc published several articles – also in French, English and Spanish – on matters of European law as well as Belgian and international construction law and he is by and times invited to speak at certain seminars and conferences. He continuously studies evolutions in Belgian and international business law by systematically participating to (study) seminars and subscriptions to several law journals.
